BREAKFAST & COMIC BOOKS

What’s the breakfast bit about?

Well, it’s supposed to be the most important meal of the day and I’m aiming for this to be the equivalent in comic book comment.

So come and get your all day breakfast.

And comic books!

Personally, I read comic books for escapism.

Pure escapism.

I get my reality fix when I wake up, step out the front door or turn on the news channel.

Therefore, escapism grounded in reality is a joy to read.

We all read comic books for different reasons so to have a ‘one size fits all’ approach is doomed to failure.

The marketplace is filled with diversity of genres.

Just read Previews magazine.

I choose to champion spandex clad superheroics because I truly love the medium.

New publishers please note, the only characters that can sell a comic book by themselves are the icons.

The main ones are Batman, Spiderman, The X-Men and Superman.

An icon is a household name with a recognized costume.

Before the icons were icons, visionary creators underpinned their stories.

It follows that comic book is sold on the strength of the creators, the talent and that an overnight successful creator is many years in the making.

Research, research, research.

Current Marvel editor in chief Joe Quesada recently stated that spandex originally came off the X-Men to wipe the slate clean.

It was also to capitalise on the success of the X-Men movie as a ploy to bring in new readers.

Previous editor in chief Bob Harras was famously fired for failing to convert those high film turnout numbers into higher comic book sales.

Part of the reason was that the X-Men franchise at the time was an unreadable, confusing mess.

Proven writer Grant Morrison with artist Frank Quietly was brought in to reinvigorate the flagship title with a darker, intelligent sensibility and he did this spectacular success.

The costumes were also more in tune with the movie versions.

With Morrison leaving the title to work for DC Comics and the writer of the massively popular Buffy TV writer, Joss Whedon taking the helm, spandex is back.

And with the foundation already laid by Morrison the only way is up.

As long as thought provoking, entertaining and clear stories are the order of the day the only way is up.

The X-Men franchise has been reloaded and is destined to run and run.

For now, I’ll be running along beside them.

Breakfast is served!
