What’s
the breakfast bit about?
Well,
it’s supposed to be the most important meal of the day and I’m
aiming for this to be the equivalent in comic book comment.
So
come and get your all day breakfast.
And comic books!
So.
Almost
one year since I started Growler’s World and what have I learned?
That
writing isn’t as easy as I thought but the gaps between writer's
block are getting shorter.
I
have a new found respect for comic book writers, journalists, in
fact, all professional writers.
I’m
gradually finding my voice each time I write and hope to entertain
and educate.
The
beauty of comic books is you don’t need a million pounds (or
dollars) of equipment to initially set up your own story.
You
just need a pen or pencil, some paper and your imagination.

To
create concepts fit for print, TV, animation and film.
I
aim to one day develop my own original concepts, which is a different
discipline than reporting on everyone else’s.
Growler’s
Universe of Ideas or The GROWLERVERSE for short.
I’ll
keep you posted.
The
football (soccer) has been riveting. Euro 2004 has lived up to the
drama and hype with some great excitement.
We
(England) got knocked out in the quarterfinals by Portugal on penalties
after an enthralling game.
Roll
on the World Cup in 2006!
I
reckon the Czech Republic will ultimately win the Euro 2004 tournament,
as every match they’ve played has been spellbinding and the
last match they played, against Holland, was a classic.
Ok.
Enough football. The
Wimbledon Tennis tournament has just started too...

Been
sorting out my comics recently.
They'd
been neglected for ages (dare I say years) so I’ve got a bit of
time off work, for other reasons, and have some spare moments.
I
had given away about a third of it a few years ago to various hospitals
and charities, which was a lot of the speculator glut I had accumulated
in the last boom period (I believe we are currently in another comic book
industry boom time).
First
analysis of my collection. Three quarters of it are Marvel comics.
So
I guess I’m still a Marvel Zombie at heart
That’s
the story of my comic book life. 19 years of pure joy and escapism.
Right.
Will
the real British Stan Lee please stand up?
What am I on about?
American
comic book creator and co founder of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee.
He
is widely credited as the high profile saviour of modern day superhero
comic books from his days as a writer and editor and I was wondering
who our equivalent was.

At
present I would have to divide the two jobs as there are no equivalents
in my opinion.
For
editorial it would have to be Dez Skinn, champion of superhero comic books,
current editor of Comics International magazine and former editor of Marvel
UK.
Look
out for the book of the history of Marvel UK, coming soon, for more of
Dez and the British superhero scene.
For
the writer equivalent it has to be a choice of Alan Moore, one of
the best writers out today, Grant Morrison a fellow powerhouse writer
and Mark Millar.
A
modern day King Midas, every concept Alan Moore creates or reinvents
is pure quality. Check out his stuff, mainly trade paperbacks or
graphic novels at any comic shop, bookshop or online bookshop. This
is how you write great comic book stories.
His
latest concepts Top 10, Promethea and Tom Strong are fantastic examples
of what can be achieved in the medium and he never rests on his
laurels. Always
pushing the boundaries and forging new ground.
The
same can be said for Grant Morrison, whose recent Seven Soldiers
and Final Crisis were big blockbusters in the comic book industry.
I
personally lean towards author Mark Millar whose amazing work for
Marvel Comics shows off his clear love for superheroes. Including
the Ultimates, Wolverine: Enemy of the State, Ultimate Fantastic
Four and Ultimate X-Men. All excellent stories.
So
there you have it, my joint nominations for the British equivalent
of Stan Lee.

There
are loads of writers and editors coming through and it will only be a
matter of time before there is a joint editor and writer to create a British
equivalent of Marvel Comics.
A
comic book and entertainment powerhouse.
The
closest this came to happening was with publishers ComX who produced the
acclaimed title Cla$$ War amongst others.
Let
the creating begin!
Breakfast
is served!
