BREAKFAST & COMIC BOOKS

Growler on Superhero Comic Books >

INDEX

<The Hunt for a British Stan Lee...|Off to China...>

What’s the breakfast bit about?

Well, it’s supposed to be the most important meal of the day and I’m aiming for this to be the equivalent in comic book comment.

So come and get your all day breakfast.

And comic books!

I’m finding that I write best, first thing in the morning.

I let ideas, that are bubbling up in the waking hours, percolate for a while before getting up and jotting them down on paper.

That in turn gets my creative juices going and before you know it, another ‘Breakfast…’ column is complete.

Ok, quick change of subject.

In an earlier column I was talking about various animated series. I have to add another classic to the list.

Aeon Flux. Originally designed as a series of shorts for MTV they have been collected on DVD and need to be seen.

Very quirky and stunningly original, animator Peter Chung, who went on the work on the Animatrix and now the Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury, designed this sci-fi masterpiece.

So Crossgen Comics has filed for bankruptcy.

Looks like the end is indeed near for the embattled publisher.

The amount of money they owe their former staff and various creditors, including their printers, is truly astounding.

Though Marvel pulled out of a similar situation in the late nineties, it would take a miracle for Crossgen to come through. I still wish them luck though as they brought some fresh ideas to the table.

Came across this mad take on Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy in comic book format by writer/artist John Byrne of X-Men and Fantastic Four fame.

Check it out.

It was the pencilling work of John Byrne, combined with the writing of Chris Claremont, which laid the foundation for the huge current success and popularity of Marvel Comics' X-Men franchise.

Euro 2004 football (soccer) finals and Wimbledon tennis tournament have now concluded.

Rank outsiders Greece won the football trophy with a magnificent display of skill and will.

17 year old Russian Maria Sharapova beat last years champion Serena Williams to claim the prestigious tennis crown in a thrilling encounter that few thought she could win.

Coupled with the fact that she had never won a major tournament before.

She and her parents had to sacrifice much for her to get to that point, it was a great story.

Truly, the year of the underdog. But what have those sporting achievements got to do with comics?

Well, many superhero comic book stories are – at their crux – tales of individual or collective personal triumphs over adversity.

They're about doing the right thing, making mistakes and overcoming them. They carry an ultimately positive message, and I’m all about positivity.
