COMIC BOOKS AT THE GATE

INDEX

The superhero comic book is banging at the gate of popular entertainment.

Too long kept out by self-doubt and historical misconceptions.

A new vanguard of talent is forging a permanent legacy, soon to be embedded in everyday life.

Are you ready for conquest?

A Fantastic Foursome

Not to be outdone by DC Comics' new lease of life for it’s popular icons Batman, Superman and other titles, there is a buzz surrounding Marvel Comics these days.

Generated by the steady renewal of their biggest franchises and topped by the creation of the Icon imprint for creator owned work, long overdue.

So let me break it down for you.

The Fantastic Four, the book that started off the Marvel Universe now has four titles.

Each aimed at a different audience.

Some might say that's overkill.

I say that’s the way to build your base.

This time the expansions feature top notch talent which will further bolster the titles.

I mean, get this, Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis, Mark Waid, J M Straczynski and newcomer, and quality find, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

All accomplished writers at the top of their game and complimented by the artistic talents of Steve McNiven, Stuart Immonen, Mike Wieringo, Adam Kubert and Mike Mckone.

Don’t believe me?

Check out and read the Fantastic Four, Ultimate Fantastic Four or the Marvel Knights version.

You will want more.

This is a no brainer and I don’t know why it’s taken so long but I’m glad it’s been done for the future of the industry.

Putting the best talent on the biggest names spells a great read and forces all other publishers to raise their game.

The regular version is the core title set in the original Marvel universe that keeps to the continuity and the characterization started by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

The Marvel Knights version gives us an edgier look at those characters grounding them more in reality and everyday situations.

The Ultimate Fantastic Four is a total reworking of the original concept with new takes on all the original characters with new ones thrown in.

It has a very cinematic, widescreen action feel to it.

There is also a Marvel Adventures version for a younger audience which has been neglected in recent years.

Oh, and the characters?

The scientific genius Mr Fantastic and the tragic comedian, The Thing.

Also, the reckless Human Torch and the voice of reason, the Invisible Woman.

What's that?

Their powers?

You’ll have to read the issues or the collected trades to find out.

You won’t be disappointed.
