Mutants
A
reflection, written in 2004...
After
two successful films, the X-Men are household names and now is the
time to get into their monthly adventures with three series from
Marvel Comics.
Dubbed
X-Men Reloaded, some of the best writers and artists have been gathered
together to bring you first class stories featuring different versions
of the team.
Marvel has also wisely brought out a mini guide book X-Men Universe
to bring you up to speed with all the characters.
Mutants
have never been so popular!
First
up is The Astonishing X-Men written by Joss Whedon and illustrated
by John Cassaday.
Joss
Whedon is the creator and writer of the Buffy and Angel TV series
which was massively popular due to Whedon’s witty scripts
and sharp dialogue.

Whedon's quality writing, infused to the X-Men will only serve to increase
its popularity and increase it’s fanbase.
It’s
ultra modern feel makes it a natural successor to Grant Morrison’s
previous take on the team.
John
Cassaday’s artwork is a work of genius to behold and brings the
characters to life before your eyes.
The
Uncanny X-Men is penned by the undisputed godfather of the X-Men
universe, Chris Claremont.
The
illustrations are provided by Alan Davis, another veteran of the
industry.
Like
a father returning home to his children Claremont gives his X-Men
team that love that only he can.
Claremont
first defined the characters that appeared in the recent movies.
Famous
for his strong female characters, intriguing sub-plots and high
adventure look forward to intense epics and emotional rollercoasters.
Many of his stories have gone on to become classics in their own
right.
Alan
Davis’s smooth artwork gives this a classic feel and renders
the characters with a solid authority, returning the title to greatness.

Chuck
Austen writes the third title, simply called X-Men, which is drawn by
Salvador Larroca.
Austen’s
team focuses more on internal team dynamics and their personal lives,
bringing a more soap opera feel to his stories.
Expect
plenty of arguing in the ranks and romantic tensions aplenty.
Not afraid of a little controversy this series will have a sharp,
cutting edge to it.
Salvador
Larroca’s pencils are gorgeous and well defined.
He
has a clear sense of dynamic storytelling which adds to the enjoyment
of the book.
New
X-men, features the next generation of X-Men set in the Xavier Institute
of Higher Learning, which doubles as the mansion base for the X-Men.
Here
we’ll see the trials and tribulations of the new students
learning to use and control their powers whilst dealing with personal
issues.
Written
by Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir this series is illustrated
by Randy Green in a slick, sleek style which enhances the energy
of the narrative.
As
always, creative teams in comic books come and go and fresh creators
enter the mix to add more to the ever growing tapestry of the Marvel
Universe.
