SUPERHERO COMIC BOOKS AT THE GATE

< Avenging Heroics | Dawn Trading >

The superhero comic book is banging at the gate of popular entertainment.

Too long kept out by self-doubt and historical misconceptions.

A new vanguard of talent is forging a permanent legacy, soon to be embedded in everyday life.

Are you ready for conquest?

Along came a Spider...

A reflection, written in 2004...

Spiderman 2 is breaking box office records around the world and is on course to be one of the most successful films of all time.

Viewers will be enthralled by the menace of Doctor Octopus, the heroics of Spider-Man and touched by the love story between Spider-Man’s alter ego Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson.

Who would have believed that three guys named Stan, Steve and John could have created all this quality? Writer Stan Lee and artists Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr invented and defined the early comic book adventures of Spider-Man for Marvel Comics and these concepts are still fresh today.

Shy student Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider and gains the powers of the arachnid.

He learns early on that ‘with great power comes great responsibility’.

Spider-Man is easily one of the most recognized superhero icons today.

If you’ve seen the film and want more, guess what?

There is more!

In the form of comic books.

Yes, Spider-Man’s story continues, told by the best writing and artistic talents in the business.

Brought to you by Marvel Comics.

Ultimate Spider-Man is the title you need if you’ve seen the film and are looking for a similar style of story. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Mark Bagley this is a movie style comic book and is great for new and old readers alike.

It retells the origin of Spider-Man and updates the whole concept for a modern audience.

The dialogue is scarily realistic and there are genuine emotional moments within which will shock.

Capped with madcap action you must give this series a try.

Amazing Spider-Man is the continuation of the original comic book title with all it’s rich history but isn’t bogged down with it and you don’t have to know anything to jump in and enjoy the story.

Written by J M Straczynski (who wrote sci-fi TV show Babylon 5) with art by John Romita Jr (son of above mentioned 'Jazzy' John Romita) and Mike Deodato, these are deep stories with plenty of action. High adventure all the way!

Spectacular Spider-Man is also set in the original Marvel Universe and is an alternate take on the character written by Paul Jenkins and drawn in a manga-esque style by Humberto Ramos.

Focusing a bit more on the man behind the mask, Peter Parker.

Marvel Knights Spider-Man is a bit more gritty compared to the above three titles.

It has a distinctly harder, more mature edge to it’s stories and is a little brutal at times but is still Spider-Man at his wise-cracking best. It's written by Mark Millar and drawn by Terry Dodson.

Marvel Adventures Spider-Man is aimed at younger audiences and are mostly retelling the classic stories of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko with new writers and artists at the helm.

This one’s great for the kids to get into.

All these titles are available in collected editions as trade paperbacks (sometimes called graphic novels) and are available in most bookshops or comic book retailers.

And remember, with great stories comes a great responsibility to enjoy those stories!
