Superhero fiction is one of the hottest storytelling genres out there! It is a hallmark of innovation and quality which is regularly seen in its content in comic books, films and other places. Here's where I comment on everything you need to know. Rawle Austin presents... New trailer for Earth's Mightiest Heroes: The Avengers
The Twelfth month brings renewal to Marvel Comics with the latest stunning superhero comic book offerings. DC Comics have an equally strong line up of superhero titles to check out in December 2010. News recently surfaced that publisher Atlas Comics was reforming a line up of titles to re-enter the comic book arena for the first time since 1975. Championed by the grandson of Martin Goodman, the first publisher of Marvel Comics, I must admit I'd never even heard of them before but seeing their classic line up it struck me that they were the forerunners of CrossGen Comics. That is to say putting out a range of genre comic books with no superheroes with the best creative talent working for them, including Steve Ditko! Check out these Atlas titles circa 1975 here! Ok, with all these great superhero movies being released one thing is certain. They must retain and improve on the quality each time and make fantastic films. One flop too many could slow the momentum currently being built up. So what makes a bad superhero movie? Simple. A great concept with poor execution. That's it in a nutshell. Poor execution. The concept is what brings you to the film, especially the fans, so expectations are already high but if the result on display is disappointing then you've lost them and the bad word spreads. What the audience thought they were going to get was far removed from what they actually saw. Cool comic book artwork by Stuart Immonen
So the moral of the story is make exceptional quality the top priority. Marvel Comics creating Marvel Studios to infuse quality in their movie output is just what the doctor ordered. We have superhero films that accurately reflect what we read on the comic book page. Long may it continue! Wildstorm Comics R.I.P. This company/studio was part of the history making formation of Image Comics back in 1992 with its founder, artist superstar Jim Lee. Over the years it put out some fantastic superhero concepts with top creative talent including Wildcats, Gen 13, The Authority, Planetary to name a few. In the midst of owner DC Comics' restructuring it was a casualty of the current economy and its own underperformance. It will be missed. Cool comic book artwork by Jheremy Raapack
