The Return to China...

At the end of April 2007 I will be returning to China for an initial period of three months.

I'll be staying with a dear friend in Shenzhen which is quite close to Hong Kong.

It's a fact-finding tour/holiday and I'll be updating my adventures online.

Stayed tuned for more details.

Down but not out...

After a phenomenal recent run of form Spurs were knocked out of the FA Cup. We played a replay against Chelsea and they did deserve to win as they played excellent.

But, we're still in the UEFA Cup so there's still a chance for cup glory.

Also, our Premiership form has picked up immensely so I expect a European place next season at the very least.

The future's bright, the future's Spurs!

The Bicentenary of the Abolition of Slavery Act

Sunday 25 March 2007 marks the 200th anniversary of Britain's abolition of the slave trade.

The national events happening up and down the country are a way to remember this appalling genocide and to highlight how far we have come as human beings in the way we treat each other.

I recently watched an excellent documentary by Moira Stewart which focused on William Wilberforce. It will be repeated and here's the press release details;

Moira Stuart in Search of Wilberforce.
In this personal journey, across three continents, Moira Stuart follows the crusade of a man said to have abolished Britain's trade in human cargo.

William Wilberforce is at the centre of 200th anniversary commemorations marking what is considered one of Britain's noblest achievements. He is remembered as the man who freed the slaves but have we created a mythological champion?

Moira Stuart takes a fresh outlook at the apparent contradictions in the story of William Wilberforce and offers a new perspective on the abolition of the slave trade, long overdue.

This programme repeats on Friday March 30 on BBC TWO at 2.55 am.

Didn't he do well?

Lewis Hamilton, on his debut Formula 1 Grand Prix, finished third and gained a podium finish.

Fantastic result and extremely inspiring to see.

If you put your mind to something and believe it can be done, you will acheive your dreams.

Enter Growler's Trailer Park...

A couple of film trailers that caught my eye;

Curse of Golden Flower - The latest Zhang Yimou film. He's the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

This films looks stunning. Starring Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li this has all the hallmarks of an epic in the making. A true period piece, set in ancient China, which are always my favourite. Bring it on!

Also, 300, Frank Miller's latest graphic novel to be adapted for the big screen. Another ancient epic, this time set in Greece.

It tells of the mythical battle between 300 Spartans and a million Persians. As only Frank Miller can re-tell it.

In a word, stunning. I can't wait for this.

Spurring it on...!!!

Spurs 4 - 3 West Ham

What a match, what a score, what a team!!

Couldn't believe the result of this match. I thought it was all over at 2 - 0 to West Ham then, out of nowhere, the fightback commenced.

Two late goals for the Spurs sealed the victory and our fourth win on the trot!

It's all good!!

A simply stunning movie...

Letters from Iwo Jima.

I'd heard a lot about this film. Directed by Clint Eastwood and a companion piece to his earlier film Flags of our Fathers, this shows the Second World War battle for the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese perspective.

The film had rave reviews in Japan as it showed a lot of the realities of war such as forced conscripts and terrifying conditions. It was very moving and showed an abundance of emotion from all the main cast.

The acting was superb across the board and I was engrossed from start to finish. Told in Japanese with English subtitles this film is a masterpiece.

I give it 8 out of 10 and recommend you see it.

Is it windy or is it just me...?

Went to see an advanced screening of the film Typhoon.

It's billed as the largest ever Korean film ever made, budget wise. Turned out to be a great action thriller. It had a whole bittersweet vibe to it.

Two kids involved as a delegation about to get asylum from North Korea to South. But somehow it goes wrong and destiny is made that day.

The film showcases a cool, titanic match up between a government agent facing up against a ruthless killer.

Sort of a cross between Face Off and Heat.

This was a 7 out of 10 for me.

An Olympic evening...

Attended a reception held at London's City Hall to welcome the official mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games who are on a tour at the moment.

Had a chance to do some networking, practice my Mandarin and take a few pictures.

All in all, a great evening.

The Spurs keep marching on...

Spurs are on a roll!

After a run of three defeats we've just had three wins back to back.

We beat Fulham 4 - 0, then Everton 2 - 1 before routing Bolton 4 - 0.

Robbie Keane was on fire during this period and I say that's testament to Martin Jol's squad rotation policy.

It's all getting quite exciting.

Long may it continue!
