Rawle Austin's Blog - Positive life commentary...

London, through the eyes of Growler...

You know, these days I take my camera out everywhere I go.

So I can take pictures around London.

It's great because I've started noticing certain bits of the city that usually I just pass by.

There's some stunning architecture all over the place and a lot of the open spaces are inspired.

Here's a link to my photo album which I update regularly.

So if you want to see a different view of London, or share it with a friend or two, please feel free to check it out.

Growler's YouTube - See the World in GROWLERVISION!

Finally joined YouTube.

It's a cool site where people upload their favourite video clips to share worldwide.

This is where I'll keep my favourite vids, so you'll see the world in GROWLERVISION.

All part of the Growlersworld Experience.

Enjoy!

Shhh... Keep the noise down...!

A mate recently gave me a list of museums in London to check out. This is something I've been meaning to do for ages. Haven't really been to a lot of them since school.

I definitely want to make some time to see them and do more site-seeing around London.

There's so much history here and it's easy to take it for granted with the everyday routine.

It's time to break free!

Anyway, here's that list of museums...

National Portrait Gallery - top floor, V&A, British Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, National Maritime Museum, Horniman Museum and Imperial War Museum.

Cheers Dan!

Presenting Herge's Adventures of Tintin...!

Heard that Tintin - the world famous Belgian detective who was brought to life in comic book form by writer and artist Herge - is coming to the big screen directed by Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings and King Kong fame and produced by Steven Spielberg.

With these two heavyweights behind it I'm expecting big things. I loved the comic books and recently watched the animated adaptations which were thoroughly enjoyable.

Herge's stories along with Goscinny and Uderzo's Asterix were two of the only European comic book stories that I really enjoyed.

He created a memorable cast with distinct personalities with dramatic stories often grounded in real world current affairs.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about this film.

Have a look at the Tintin website,

and check out the history of this cool character!

Pirating on the high seas...!

Saw 'Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End' today. It's the final chapter of the story and a lot happened that I didn't see coming.

I loved how everything wrapped up and the bittersweet conclusion was very pleasing. There was a good balance of action and character and gorgeous special effects.

I kept being reminded of the old Harryhausen Sinbad movies featuring epic adventures. Pirates was great and you'll love it.

I give it 7 out of 10.

A few words on greatness...

'The heights by great men reached and kept, were not attained by sudden flight,

But they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.'

By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Basically, success doesn't happen overnight.

Wise words indeed.

You have to watch Paul Merton in China...!

I've been watching the new series Paul Merton in China and have been very impressed.

For those who don't know, Merton's a comedian who appears weekly on the BBC1 show 'Have I got news for you.'

He's got a very witty, dry humour that's guaranteed to get at least one laugh out of you.

Anyway, he's travelled six weeks throughout China and what I like about it is that he doesn't just focus on the tourist attractions but meets real people.

The people show the true magic of China and this documentary series serves as a great introduction to the country if you've been curious.

It shows every Monday on Channel 5 at 9pm and started on 21 May.

Ode to Spurs...

So the premiership season has ended and Spurs have amazingly finished 5th, guaranteeing a UEFA cup place next season. This means we will be in European football. The march to glory continues.

Now, between you and me, I put a £1 bet on Spurs to win the premiership next season. At 80 to 1 odds the chances are quite slim but its come a long way from 350 to 1 some years ago.

So I have to end with the obligatory, "Come on you Spurs!"

Feel the magic, here!

Magic in Monte Carlo...!

So, it's been two weeks since Lewis Hamilton has been on top of the drivers championship which he gained by coming second in the Spanish Grand Prix.

Today, 27 May 2007, he is now joint first with Fernanado Alonso after again coming second behind Alonso at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Hamilton has finished on the podium in all of his five races which is a record for someone in his debut season.

His competitive edge is razor sharp and the fun is just beginning!

A time for quotes...

I've been reading the Claremont Dictionary of Quotations lately. I've had it for years but just recently opened it and its quite handy for the odd bus journey.

This quote caught my imagination;

'Know the true value of time; snatch, seize and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination.'

By Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield

China rescheduled...

Ok, the China trip has been rescheduled. Getting ready to explore Shenzhen and the surrounding area.

Also dusting down my Mandarin language learning program and gearing up to restart my progress.

I've realised that one of the best ways I can measure my fluency is to take an exam so I'm researching the HSK Chinese proficiency exam which is a globally recognised standard of fluency in the language.

This will also provide a focus and will end the stop/start studying I've been doing for quite some time.

I'll let you know how it goes.

A Memory full of Raindrops...

Went out with a friend the other day and we got talking about books from our childhood. She mentioned 'A necklace of raindrops and other stories'. This immediately rang a bell but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

The title sounded so familiar. You see, in primary school, I was a bit of a bookworm. I was always in the library and must have read half the books in there!

Anyway, I did a bit of searching online and it turned out that the book was written by Joan Aitken. I'm sure I had read it back then but, going through her bibliography, I found that this author had written one of my favourite books.

'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase.' I can't remember the exact storyline but I do remember being enthralled it at the time and loving the intense drama.

Ain't it funny where a cup of coffee in Starbucks can take you?

Gaining Face...

I joined Facebook which is one of the best networking sites out there.

It's another tool to help get the word out there.

And the word is Growlersworld!

Here's my profile.

Check it out and join up!
