Built to Last by Jim Collins and Jerry I Porras. This book is a revelation. What these guys have done is spent five years analysing some of the oldest top global companies to see why they have stayed at the top of their game for so long. It's incredibly inspiring and some of the simple findings can be applied to everyday life, if you're so inclined. For example, one piece of advice is "Do something. If one thing fails, try another. Fix. Try. Do. Adjust. Move. Act. No matter what, don't sit still!" It's a fantastic read and to find out about the beginnings of companies like Sony and Disney is very enlightening. So if you're looking for a different perspective on success, check out this book!
Ok, so we lost against Liverpool 1 - 0, but on the plus side we fought well. Created loads of chances and showed a fighting spirit. All is not lost and I still feel we can claw a Champions League spot. Come on you Spurs!
The Christmas day episode was fantastic! I can see they've really gone to town with the special effects and are spending money where it should be spent on the show. Catherine Tate was just funny and the casting for this one was top notch. Loved the TARDIS car chase. The references to Rose were nice but it was the next, third season previews that caught my eye! New assistant, Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman, looks to have added an edge to the show and I can't wait for this to get started. Most noticable are the amped up special effects. Absolutely amazing! So imagine the shock of reading this New Year's Eve morning that David Tennant (who plays Doctor Who) was leaving mid-way through the fourth season! What a rollercoaster! I'm sure his replacement will be perfectly cast but I guess Hollywood beckons for Mr Tennant. Oh well, the one thing certain in life is change... Doctor Who is really enjoying a boom time at the moment with spin-offs such as Torchwood and the New Year's Day starting 'Sarah Jane Adventures' gaining rave reviews. It's a great time for UK sci-fi and superhero fiction.
After our recent defeat to Newcastle, Spurs have bounced back to beat Aston Villa on the Boxing Day fixture. The score was 2 - 1 and I have to say, Jermaine Defoe is really blasting them in these days. With able assists by Dmitar Berbetov and Tom Huddlestone the team is starting to gel nicely under Martin Jol's leadership. And the best news I heard was that Tom Huddlestone has signed a new four year contract to stay with the Spurs! It can't get better than this (but it will!). The motto at WhiteHart Lane is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do). Indeed.
I was saddened to hear of the passing of James Brown on Christmas day. The legacy he leaves is immense and will live on through his creative genius. He literally changed the face of music as we know it and influenced countless artists during his long career. He sang such hits as Please Please Please, Night Train, Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, It's a Man's World, Living in America and Get Up (Sex Machine). His sublime dance moves inspired Michael Jackson and MC Hammer. Perhaps the greatest recipient has been innovative and constantly groundbreaking tour de force that is Hip-hop and RnB. His rhythms and funk based beats permeate these sound like a reinforced concrete foundation. Building a strong industry that brings joy and entertainment to millions worldwide. If you've never heard James Brown's tunes you need to listen to them. I guarantee that you'll love them. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
"Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. You can be that generation." Nelson Mandela, February 2005
Still on a high after Spurs won 2 - 1 against Manchester City on Sunday. A corking goal from Tom Huddlestone secured the win, our first away from home this season. A Champions League spot beckons I predict.
... you did something for the first time? If you're like me, not often enough! And it does make a difference. That feeling of excitement and joy is so refreshing. So enough talk. Action!
Feeling good this morning after watching yesterdays performance by the boys. Spurs 3 - 1 Dinamo Bucharest Fantastic goals against the Romanian team. Dmitar Berbertov's amazing intercept and cracking shot started the ball rolling. Then the sublime Jermaine Defoe with two corkers. Sweet goals both. We've been great in Europe this season. Not so in the Premiership. This was a joy to watch, indeed it was the first I've watched all season. Plenty of ole football and skill by the boys from Whitehart Lane. Now lets push up the Premiership table, eh?
Dave Cockrum recently passed away. "Who was he?" I hear you cry? I never met the man but he was a giant in the comic book industry. A master artist with a craft so honed, his work sucked you into every story he illustrated. Dave Cockrum, along with Len Wein and Chris Claremont gave the world the All New, All Different X-Men! Wolverine! Storm! Colossus! Cyclops! Phoenix! Nightcrawler! Professor X! All these characters gained new life and burst onto the scene in a new team that set the world alight in the late seventies. The nucleus of this superhero team is still going strong today! I first came across his stories in the late eighties and let me tell you, every issue he ever did still stands the test of time. These stories helped to cement my love of comic books. Veritable classics! These characters have been given new life in the movies and their comic book adventures continue to this day. What better way to serve as one immortal testament to a life's work. So, my thoughts are with Dave Cockrum's family at this time. His memory will live on forever in his creations. Peace and love to all.
