Rawle
Austin presents...
A
conversation with Eric Quartey - Aspiring to an Entrepreneurial
Destiny
Eric
Quartey is a budding entrepreneur in the making. I asked him a few
questions to uncover his thought-making process and inspire others.
Rawle
Austin: Could you briefly introduce yourself to Growlersworld.com
readers?
Eric
Quartey: I am Eric Quartey, 33 years old born in West London
now living in South East London.
I
have 2 sisters and a younger brother. |
|
 |
My
parents were born in Ghana and came over to England when they were young
and sacrificed themselves to raise us up in the best possible way.
I
have a lovely wife called Theo and 2 beautiful children Che (4yrs old)
and Chenai (1yr old).
RA: So, what exactly is management accounting?
EQ:
Management Accounting covers a variety of things such as budgeting,
forecasting, financial planning, preparation of month end reporting,
quarterly reporting and investment appraisal (ensuring we get the
best from our investments).
Management
accountants work closely with non finance professionals to help
them make the right decisions.
RA: What attracts you to entrepreneurial activities? |
|
 |
EQ:
Being in control of your own destiny knowing that you could make millions
or nothing at all.
In
addition, providing a direct service to customers and getting positive
feedback is a very special moment.
RA: What are your business ambitions?
EQ:
I would like to be running a business at some point in the future
either as a Finance Director and indeed CEO.
I
am not sure what market the business will be in.
RA: What has been your most memorable business experience
to date and why?
EQ:
Performing market research for one of my recent businesses.
My
business partner went to Tanzania (with a small group of people)
playing football against two local teams in a small village called
Lupiro.
The
two week trip was memorable (breathtaking excursions) and raising
money for the local orphanage and local area gave me immense personal
satisfaction. |
|
 |
The
chill down days in Zanzibar was equally nice to recharge my batteries
after living for two weeks without many luxuries.
RA: Who inspires you now in the business world and why?
EQ:
I am still inspired by Richard Branson because of his enthusiasm and energy
given to his ventures even though he is a multi millionaire.
RA:
Who are your top three all time successful business people and why?
EQ:
Richard Branson, Bill Gates and Graham Simpson. Same reasons as
in 6 although Graham because I know him personally and respect what
he has achieved.
RA: What advice would you give to someone eager to start
their own business?
EQ:
Ensure you write a proper business plan, know your market and double
whatever you think you will need for marketing. |
|
 |
Ask
people for advice and be prepared to work hard and sacrifice.
RA:
Which holiday destination would you most like to visit and why?
EQ:
Seychelles - for tranquillity to unwind.
RA:
What are the top three holiday destinations that you've visited
to date and what made them special?
EQ:
Cuba - Theo and I were married; Brazil - our first real holiday
together and Tanzania as explained earlier.
I
will not count Ghana as I count that as home.
RA: You're a Chelsea supporter. How did that get started?
EQ:
I liked Ruud Gullit (one of the first black managers in the Premiership)
and the rest is history.
|
|
 |
I
certainly am not a fan because of Roman Abramovich and the success he
has brought to the club, but it is nice to see.
RA:
Who are their top three players this season (06/07) and what's good about
them?
EQ:
John Terry (the rock in defence); Michael Essien for his energy and although
I hate to say it [Christian] Ronaldo and his twinkle toes.
RA: Will Chelsea win the Premiership title for the third year
running?
EQ:
Of course.
RA: And finally, any last pearls of wisdom you'd like to leave
us with?
EQ:
Be happy with whatever you have, especially if you are healthy. Make time
for friends and family in such a busy world we live in.
