top British pop group Girls Aloud and English National Ballet will tonight perform in Bin Jiang Park, Shanghai. The UK’s most successful virtual band, Gorillaz, will also make a contribution. They are taking part in London Fusion, a showcase of some of the finest artists from London and China, which is being hosted by Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London. Mr Livingstone is at the end of a week-long tour of China to deepen relationships with London. He is particularly keen to encourage relationships between the arts and the creative industries in London and China. Mr Livingstone said: “Tonight will be a fantastic celebration of the arts in London and China, and provides a glimpse of some of the best talent from our two great creative countries. It also reflects my personal commitment to deepening the understanding and respect for each other through a greater appreciation of our respective cultures. London Fusion will also feature a fashion show from designers in China and London including Unconditional, Ashish Gupta, Bora Aksu, Jenny Ji, Wang Wei, Liu Lei and Wang Yiyang coordinated in conjunction with Director of Shanghai International Fashion Centre, Madame Lu. And there will be an exhibition of six collections by recent graduates of University of the Arts London’s BA Jewellery Design Programme. Mme Lu said: “I am delighted that London is bringing its fashion to Shanghai. As the fashion capital of China, we look forward to more collaborative work between the two cities”. The event follows not just Livingstone’s tour of China, but also a series of cultural events and collaborations. Earlier this year London hosted a China in London season for three months, which celebrated Chinese culture, and included a visit by Li Yuchun. It also included the largest Chinese New Year celebration outside of Asia, which 200,000 people took part in. Earlier this week Livingstone signed agreements with the Mayors of Shanghai and Beijing to promote their cities together in areas including the arts. The Visit - Mr Livingstone will arrive on Sunday 9 April, and leave China on Friday 14 April. - The delegation will visit Beijing and Shanghai. - The visit has been planned in conjunction with Think London, the inward investment agency for London, Visit London, the city’s tourism organisation, and London Higher, the umbrella organisation for London’s universities and higher education colleges. - Meetings and events during the trip will promote London as a tourism, business and educational destination, and look for ways to promote both London and Beijing as they prepare to host Olympic Games. Tourism - Tourism from China to the UK is growing rapidly. - In January 2005, the Chinese government gave the UK approved destination status, making it easier for Chinese citizens to get a visa. - Tourist attractions in London including Thames river cruises and museums are increasingly offering tours in Mandarin to cater to Chinese tourists. - Visit London, the tourism organisation for the capital, has just won the European Chinese Tourists Welcoming Award for best overall performance, reflecting its commitment to growing Chinese tourism. Business - London has become a gateway to Europe for Chinese businesses. - There are now 29 Chinese companies with shares listed by the London Stock Exchange, with more planning to join them. - London receives more direct foreign investment from China than any other European city, according to the Ernst & Young’s European Investment Monitor. - There are approximately 400 Chinese companies investing in the UK, including 160 from Hong Kong. Many choose London to host their European headquarters. - There are now more than 20 direct scheduled flights between mainland China and London every week. Study in London - There are more than 7,700 Chinese students currently studying in London, according to London Higher, the umbrella group for London’s universities and higher education colleges. - The number of Chinese students has more than quadrupled in the last four years. - There are more students from China in London than from any other country. - For example, there are more than three times as many Chinese students as Irish students in London (there are 2,195 Irish students in London). Artist information Gorillaz Gorillaz is the most successful virtual band ever, fronted by four wildly talented but totally disparate characters: pretty-but-vacant singer 2D, satanic bassist Murdoc Niccals, Japanese guitar prodigy Noodle and amiable man-mountain drummer Russel Hobbs. Put together by Damon Albarn (Blur) and Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl) in 2000, their eponymous debut album was released to wide acclaim and 5million+ sales the following year. Gorillaz introduced the world to the animated four-piece, with lead-off single Clint Eastwood scoring a massive hit worldwide, and the band's astonishingly inventive promos becoming a fixture on music television everywhere. Second album Demon Days was launched in May 2005, and has spawned the hit singles Feel Good Inc., DARE and Dirty Harry. Demon Days was produced with the help of Damon Albarn and Danger Mouse, and features a stellar roll-call of guests including Ike Turner, Dennis Hopper, Neneh Cherry and De La Soul. Gorillaz closed 2005 by being crowned Best Group at the MTV Europe Awards and opened 2006 with five Grammy nominations and two Brit Awards nods. Live shows have included a mind-blowing virtual perfomance at the MTV EMAs and five nights at the Manchester International Festival, which saw all the musical collaborators behind Demon Days get together to perform the album from start to finish. English National Ballet English National Ballet is an internationally acclaimed classical ballet company touring nationally and internationally from its studio base in central London. The Company has 64 full time dancers and last year gave over 160 performances to an audience of over 200,000. of the Arts London Jewellery design graduates: These young designers have recently graduated from the University’s BA Jewellery Design programme at Central Saint Martins. Less than a year after graduation, the designers are poised for success, having already received commissions from celebrities, fashion design houses and prominent retailers. Designers Ashish Gupta Ashish Gupta came onto the London fashion scene with his debut collection in 2001. Since then he has gained respect both on a national and international level from his original and exuberant designs. His fusion of Western and Eastern cultures resulted in an eccentric and unique collection with a mix of sporty shapes, flirty ruffle shirts, layered vests, and voluminous skirts – beautiful, handcrafted pieces that are all manufactured in his own in house workshop/factory in India. His humorous attitude towards design and stunning craftsmanship has earned him the New Generation designer award three times over. Born in Delhi, the son of two doctors he studied Fine Art in India. He then moved to the UK to study at Middlesex University before moving on to Central St Martin’s to do an MA; graduating in 2000. Due to global demand, the brand is sold in London (Browns and Selfridges), Milan, Japan, Australia and the Middle East. Not only shops are snapping up these designs but celebrities too. With a fan base including the likes of Victoria Beckham, Jerry Hall, Elizabeth Jagger and Keira Knightly, he is certainly not short of high profile coverage. Sarah Jessica Parker also wore one of his designs in Sex and the City. AGANOVICH & YUNG Unlike most designer duos who are either related or partners, Aganovich & Yung is made up by two friends who met and got along in school and went on to develop a label together. Consisting of the enigmatic Serbian, Nana Aganovich and soft-spoken Ahlaiya Yung from Hong Kong, the pair graduated from the MA Womenswear Course at Central Saint Martins together with designers like Roksanda Ilncic and Ebru Ercon. After Nana Aganovich graduated from Central St Martins, the duo retreated to China where they researched and learnt the ropes to setting up and running a factory, producing clothes for labels like Marjan Pejoski, Robert Cary-Williams and Unconditional. Commuting between Shanghai and Hong Kong, she also worked as the womenswear buyer for the shop, M16. Learning from the past mistakes of other designers who rose to fame as quickly as they fell out of it from production and delivery problems, Nana wasted no time in learning the complexity of the fashion trade. Returning to London in 2005 with a factory to her name and confident in her knowledge in production, she launched the Aganovich & Yung label with Ahlaiya as a silent partner during September’s London Fashion Week. Showing to a strong press and buyer audience at the Cine Lumiere. It was subsequently bought by B Store and has since received extensive coverage from magazines like Tank and was chosen to be featured amongst six designers like Basso & Brooke as the new wave of British-based designers to surface in London. He went on to receive the award in succession for AW 06, doing a static presentation at the Natural History Museum in Feb 06’s London Fashion Week. Julia has built up a substantial portfolio of celebrity clients. Such as Kelly Brook, Myleene Klass, Victoria Beckham, Estelle and Sophie Ellis Bextor. The demand for her one –off pieces led to the creation of ‘Willie Mays’ label which showed at London Fashion Week for two seasons. Julia re-launched under her own name for Spring/Summer 2003 with her signature style of high end glamour and cutting edge. Julien MacDonald A graduate of London's Royal College of Art, the creative head at Chanel, had noted his work while he was still at college and snapped him up to produce the French fashion house's knitwear in 1996. A year later, Julien set up his own company which debuted its first collection at London Fashion Week. In March 2000, just before the Givenchy job was announced, British Airways commissioned Julien to redesign the airline's flight attendants' uniforms. KATARZYNA
SZCZOTARSKA The influence of late 50s couture style is mixed with London’s East End working class girls’ vision of elegance and their nights out in the working man’s club’. Classic details are re-interpreted through the eyes of the girls’ unique style – slightly mismatched, occasionally exaggerated and at times underplayed. Simpler and more streamlined pieces inspired by their mothers’ wardrobes like a pair of grey wool culottes are paired with a dual coloured shirt. Wispy as smock dresses are gathered round the neck, sleeves and hem. There are also Katarzyna’s signature tailoring in the form of slimming coats with a pleated bow slashed into two sections and a coat with an enlarged triple Peter Pan collar. Exaggerated proportions have also been used to redefine the shapes of garments in the collection. The choice of fabrics places emphasis on quality and couture influences – washed silk taffeta, classic super fine wools, cashmere and wool blends with a slight rough texture and an old-fashioned style wool/linen mix fabric. Colours have been kept simple and basic with a palette of white, glossy black and grey hues. PPQ PPQ designers Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker are an astute double act who began their label in 1999. They design both a main line women’s and men’s collection plus a lingerie range and jeans collection which are produced in their own factory now re-located to London from Nottingham. Vibrant colour and print are important components of their look. Their PPQ skinny jeans are great favourites with the rock fraternity. Jade Jagger, Sharleen Spiteri, Pete Doherty and The Paddingtons are fans. This spring they open a concession at Topshop with their diffusion range called PPQ Pumps which covers mens and womenswear with a rock and roll and hello sailor inspiration. Preen Firmly established as one of London’s most exciting labels, Preen continues to forge forward each season. Their collections are renowned and appreciated for their distinctive and clever cutting. Their experimentation often starts with the simplest of shapes and then springs off into detail, asymmetry, drape or fold which somehow never ignores a sexy body-shape or a bold silhouette. Great colourists they also use original prints with a very modern application. They have previously shown in Shanghai as part of Shanghai Fashion week. Unconditional UNCONDITIONAL launched in A/W 2003 with a small capsule collection of 10 pieces of menswear. The brand has established its’ own feeling of a modern elegance with pieces that are uncompromising in their attention to detail and high quality fabrications. Clean, strong silhouettes are formed from pieces that are on first impression sometimes quite basic or classic yet have very contemporary details, attitude and proportion. The collection has enjoyed one of the most successful launches of modern times, and now has almost 60 international stockists. It’s first season saw the collection bought by Harrods to be placed alongside Dior and Helmut Lang. Models make up has been provided by MAC make up, hair by Toni & Guy

The project which stems from a proposal from Greenpeace, will be taken forward by the London Development Agency (LDA), the Mayor's regeneration and skills body. The LDA are delighted to be working with Peter Head, Director of Arup, to help design the project. Greenpeace will also be working with the London Development Agency to deliver the project, which will be up to 1000 units in size. Peter Head is responsible for the Dongtan eco-city in China, on which the Mayor of London received a presentation today while in Shanghai. Dongtan aims to be the world's first sustainable city - with all the buildings powered by renewable energy, self-sufficient in water and food sourced from the surrounding farmland. The 630ha first phase of the city will house up to 80,000 people by 2020 and inhabitants will be encouraged to make use of the zero-carbon public transport, which will be powered entirely by renewable-energy. The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said: ‘Global warming was created in the west, but it is increasingly to the east to which we look for a solution. Shanghai's Dongtan sustainable-city project is breathtaking in scale and ambition and if it works it will be a beacon to the world on how to achieve a low-carbon future. "London's zero-emission development will demonstrate that we can also realise this kind of vision in Europe and that it is affordable and achievable to make all major new developments low-carbon. I am delighted that Arup's Peter Head has agreed to help kick-start this initiative. His experience from Dongtan will be a major boost to London's plans. I am once again pleased to be able to work with Greenpeace on this issue of major importance to London’s future.’ Peter Head, Director of Arup said: “Our client in China, Shanghai Industrial Investment Corp, is showing that a new paradigm of urban development that addresses environmental pollution and resource depletion can be commercially attractive and help improve quality of life. I am delighted to help demonstrate that a much more ambitious approach to sustainable development is attractive in London too.” Stephen Tindale, Executive Director of Greenpeace said: ‘Once again London is leading the way in the UK and Ken Livingstone is showing what can be done when a politician has the drive to turn aspiration into action. It’s high time central government took note of what is happening across the Thames.’

The first phase of development will consist of homes and offices for 20,000 people, rising to 500,000 on completion of all phases. 5. The Mayor of London and the LDA will be announcing further details of the planned London eco-city shortly. The development will be up to 1000 units in size.
