A late starter learning to play the violin, here are the inspirations for the journey... See also Growler's Violin - Videos, GrowlersWorld Symphony No.1 - Violin Links and GrowlersWorld Philharmonic Orchestra - Classical Music Links
One of the things I'm enjoying about learning the violin is the eventual possibilty of playing some of my favourite classical tunes. Air on the G String by Bach is my next challenge after memorising Edelweiss. Though my rendition of Edelweiss is still not a clean sound, that should improve with practice. I also love the theme tunes from the Superman and Star Wars movies, both composed by John Williams. The theme tune of the Apprentice (UK) is another favourite called the Dance of the Knights by Sergei Prokofiev. I've got sheet music for all these and have also been practising writing them out on blank sheet music paper. Some fun practising ahead and with the new ELLSO term about restart, the violin future's very bright indeed!
Attended the free to all, open rehearsals of the Simon Bolivar Youth Symphony Orchestra. It was held at the Royal Festival Hall in the South Bank Centre near Waterloo, London. I went with a fellow student from ELLSO violin school. It was quite packed and well attended. I'd watched a documentary on them before so looked forward to seeing them in action. The conductor was Gustavo Dudamel and was amazing to see live. Very animated and passionate. He got the performers to play wonderfully together. Some of the concert tickets had sold out up to one year in advance! It was easy to see why. They are truly unique. The energy and sheer love of the music was on display for all to hear. Practising for sound quality and timing the works played included Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.4 and Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. After the interval my friend and I got so caught up in catching up that we couldn't re-enter for the second half as we were late getting back! Luckily, they had live projections of the performance on the ground floor which also showed close ups of the orchestra. This was a nice contrast as we had been sitting at the back in the auditorium. All in all, a fantastic experience. Here's a brief taster.
Here's an amazing short video of violinist Sarah Chang talking about her love for Vivaldi's classical music composition, The Four Seasons. Also featuring shots of her playing too, it really captures the passion and love she has for the music. Very inspirational.
One way to learn and find inspiration for your goals is to have heroes. Heroes are people who have done or are doing the things you want to do and achieve. Heroes make it look easy. They are the best in their field. Learning the violin, my heroes are Nathan Milstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Jascha Heifetz and Sarah Chang. Each of these violinists have their own style and yet, effortlessly, they seem to produce the most amazing sounds. And most importantly of all, they look like they're enjoying every minute of it! I often watch their videos on YouTube for motivation. Harnessing the power of heroes is a great way of persuing your dreams and keeping motivated. I thoroughly recommend it.
The recent end of term concert by the East London Late Starters Orchestra was a lot of fun. It was the second one I had performed in and was a great experience. I made a short video during behind the scenes practise so hope you enjoy. It's my first solo performance of sorts and, as you can see, I've a long way to go. But practise does make perfect. Enjoy.
This is great classical performance by violinist Sarah Chang. I only discovered her recently via YouTube which is a cool resource for finding new talent and inspiration. She's playing Air on the G String by J S Bach. Enjoy.
Went to see a violin recital in St George's Church, Hanover Square for their Midweek Music in Mayfair season. It was a beautiful day for it. Tamsin Waley-Cohen was performing. I was very impressed by the amount of music she had committed to memory and her flawless performance. Wow! Excellent technique, wonderful sound. The 'voice' of a violin I find very expressive and can cover a range of emotions. It's a joy to hear and behold. I like to check out these type of perfomances to keep my motivation and inspiration at high levels. I went with a friend and afterwards we went to nearby Hanover Square to take a few pictures that I wanted to send to friends in China. Followed that with a meal in London Chinatown and practised my Mandarin with some shop staff in a nearby cake shop. All in all, a very good day!
