A late starter learning to play the violin, here are the inspirations for the journey...

A little bit of the Good Stuff...

To be the best you must be with the best, learn from the best, work with the best and compete with the best.

That's one of the reasons I love watching violinists perform on YouTube, go to free recitals at various churches around London and attend a few concerts.

Seeing how these great performers play is an inspiration and you'd be surprised just what you can learn and add to your own style of playing.

Of course, this applies to learning anything new that you are passionate about.

The thing I'm trying to perfect is playing in tune.

Positioning the fingers in the right place for the right note is quite a challenge but I'm having fun learning. I'm now in a position to practise everyday.

I get one hour of violin tuition a week at ELLSO and the rest of the three hours there is spent learning how to perform in an orchestra.

The main difference between the two is that solo performers play standing up and orchestra members sit down.

At the end of the day it's all about practise so gradual improvement will happen over time.

My ambition is to be able to move people emotionally by my violin playing.

Classical music has been around for over 300 years. I have no doubt it will be around for the next 300 years.

It's built to last.

I prefer playing it over other styles as it has a rigid sense of order and structure which tends to compliment my character, lol.

Anyway, here's virtuoso violinist Nigel Kennedy performing Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

Enjoy!

That Elusive Sound of the Violin...

Just read this great article on why the violin is one of the most difficult instruments to play well.

Compared to say, the guitar or piano.

Though it gets a little scientific and technical at times, it all boils down to bow pressure, bow position (in relation to the bridge and the finger board) and, of course, loads of practise.

The clean sound - from a long steady bow stroke - is effectively called the Helmholtz Motion and the Schelleng diagram (see the article link) shows where best to achieve this sound on the violin.

What is a violin? Learn here!

As an example of a great sound, here's violinist Katica Illényi playing the theme from the film Schindler's List.

A wonder to behold;
