Liang Yan - New Chinese Writer

Welcome to my world. My English name is Leanne.

I come from JiangXi Province in China and am now based in GuangDong Province.

I would like to introduce you to a modern view of China from my unique and personal point of view.

The experience in a hospital

Last week, I found a new job in a Labour Force Market (Job Centre), which lay in Tangxia town.

It was a good chance for me, as I wanted to learn different knowledge about various different companies.

But, as is the case in China, many companies order potential employees to have a health inspection. If the person was not healthy, they would have no chance to join the company.

Last Sunday morning, I got up very early to go to the hospital as I hoped I would be back early.

When I arrived at the hospital, there were so many people who were waiting to see doctors. All of them looked very worried.

Because it was my first time there, I didn’t know how I was going to have my health examined. The nurse was very kind and told me the procedure.

A group of young men were standing in the waiting room, no sense that another person was coming in. I asked one doctor that sitting at the side of desk.

“Excuse me doctor, I would like to have my health exam.”

“Do you have your ID card?” The man asked.

”Let me see” I replied “Sorry, I was in such a hurry this morning that I forgot to take it with me.”

“You forgot? Just go back and bring it, or else I can do nothing for you!”

“But I have no time now, can I bring my ID card this afternoon when I take my health record?”

“No way, I have no time to waste on you!”. The doctor said inhospitably.

“And please get out quickly so that I can work on other people. I am too busy!”

I felt very angry but I couldn’t say anything. I left the hospital and went back to my factory to get my ID card.

Yes, he was busy, but in my opinion, you have to be polite no matter who you are and what you do.

Your actions would affect the patients, if you were happy and always smiled to them, and then they would be relaxed. They will feel better even they were seriously ill, just because they would be happy.

I have had many chances to see different people in Tangxia, but some of their manners were really not good enough.

For example, some bus conductors speak very rudely and don’t even smile when asking you to buy tickets on a city bus.

Officers would lose their temper if you asked them too many questions in a post office; the waitresses in a restaurant would be angry with if you asked them questions too often.

China is considered as a courteous country, but what can we see now?

We teach children to respect the old and others, when meeting someone they will say Uncle, Aunt, Grandpa or Grandma.

When they ask for something they would say “Could you please…?”. What about ourselves, the adults?

We just say hi. Are we polite, are we good enough so that the young can follow us? Do we set a good example? Maybe we need to study manners from children. What a pity!

Tangxia town lies in Dongguan city, Guangdong province. It’s a developing town and it is growing very quickly.

In order to become better, it has to attract more and more foreign investors here. What we need to do first is to become more gracious.

Smiles bring wealth, courtesy brings fortune.

Be polite!
