Liang Yan - New Chinese Writer

INDEX

Welcome to my world. My English name is LeAnne.

I come from JiangXi Province in China and am now based in GuangDong Province.

I would like to introduce you to a modern view of China from my unique and personal point of view.

How can I learn English well?

Some months ago, I studied at Boyi English Training Centre and now I work here as the headmaster’s assistant.

On Sundays, I need to teach a few students primary, basic English.

During teaching, I find most of them have the problem that they are afraid of speaking English in class.

When they meet foreign teachers they avoid talking with them. It’s the same thing I used to do.

The teacher would ask me to speak on a platform in front of the class and give my opinion about some topics but my face became red and my heart beat very hard.

Of course, I couldn’t say anything. Why does this happen?

Many students say, "I only know a few words", or “I am afraid of saying the words in the wrong way”, “I don’t know what we can talk about” or “I have no topics to talk about.”

I say “No”, they are not the real reasons.

It’s just because we are too ashamed to speak English.

If we can conquer this shyness then all other problems will not be there. Why do I say this?

Yesterday, I took part in a special party, which was held by an American woman.

It was Sunday so, after class, I suggested all the students go to join the party and I promised them, “There will be many foreigners there.

What I hope will happen is that all of you will open your mouths to talk with them about anything you know or you like.

It’s a good chance to practice your listening and spoken English, Ok?” “Ok” they responded, “We will try our best.”

It took us 40 minutes walking to get there but, unfortunately, the party was nearly over when we arrived.

There were many Chinese children, they sang songs, ran here and there, smiled and spoke loudly.

After some time the hostess finished her speech and all the audience began their dinner.

Just at this moment, some children came to us, one of them pointed at one student and said, “What happened to your nose, why was it red?”

But the person who was asked didn’t give a reply to the young boy.

I was confused by this, so I said to him, “Please try to say something about what’s wrong with your nose, ok?”

“Sorry, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” he replied to me with a smile on his face.

Frank, who came from South Africa and also was a teacher in Boyi, said to me, “Your students are not brave enough, when I talked to them they just smiled at me and said nothing except sorry.

When the children came here and wanted to play with your students, they spoke in English, but your students only replied in Chinese. Why?

I know the children here are good at spoken English, why don’t your students try to speak English with the children?”

Yes, I had to agree.

Why didn’t they try to use English when they had the chance?

Is it really because they only know a little bit of English?

If the answer is yes, then why can the children speak English well?

Why are the children better than us?

They are also Chinese children, they can’t know more than our adults.

I believe the reason is that we feel too much shame.

If we can say anything and never worry what others think, if we practice anywhere and anytime, I believe we can conquer the difficulty of spoken English.

Some months ago I had a dilemma.

On the one hand I hoped to study English well and on the other I was afraid of speaking English, so I couldn’t make any great progress.

Now I know the reason. It was because I had an enemy.

It was not English, it was myself.

If I beat my fears, then I am free. I can study easily and happily.
