Liang Yan - New Chinese Writer

INDEX

Welcome to my world. My English name is Leanne Liang.

I come from JiangXi Province in China and am now based in GuangDong Province.

I would like to introduce you to a modern view of China from my unique and personal point of view.

400 - No Car Day

This is my response to an article written in the Shenzhen Daily on 20 June 2007 entitled “400,000 Residents Join City’s NO CAR DAY.”

When I was young, it snowed at least twice a year in my hometown (Tonggu Town, Jiangxi Province), but now, the town hardly sees snow.

Many broad-leaves no longer fall in autumn; and it’s not surprising to see mosquitoes and flies in winter.

What happened to the world?

Global warming!!

On TVs, radios, newspapers and magazines, you can find lots of articles discussing about the serious problem that is Global Warming!!

By the end of the century, the global temperature will increase by 2.5~4 degrees if we don’t control the emission of greenhouse gases; the sea level will be 0.5~1.4 meters higher than it was in 1900…

In 2006, China emitted 4.7 billion tons of greenhouse gases and became the second biggest Green house gas emitter in the world.

A piece of news published on March 5, 2007 by the San Francisco Chronicle showed that China is about to pass the United States as the world’s top generator of greenhouse gases.

Carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas.

What shall we do to help Earth?

Through the activity in Shenzhen, it shows us that the government is thinking highly of the environment.

Encouraging us to give up using private cars and take public transportation or even walk to work.

It not only helps us to get a better transportation system (by causing less traffic congestion), it also avoids the emission of carbon dioxide and other exhaust fumes.

At 9:15am, March 7th, 2007, after the millionth car registered in Shenzhen, the city now had the second-largest number of vehicle owners in China. Over half of them are private.

If we don’t use them, even for a kilometre, we can decrease over 75 tons of carbon dioxide emission.

If we can give up using private cars for one day in Guangdong province, in China, or all over the world, what a big help that will be to our beautiful planet!

Why don’t we try this little step by taking public transportation for a day or two?
