Liang Yan - New Chinese Writer

INDEX

Welcome to my world. My English name is LeAnne.

I come from JiangXi Province in China and am now based in GuangDong Province.

I would like to introduce you to a modern view of China from my unique and personal point of view.

A special festival

Yesterday was Chinese Mid - Autumn Day and it was a special day for me.

Last night Jon, Monica (two foreign English teachers from Australia) and I were all invited to my friend Jacky’s home to have a good night.

Mid - Autumn Day in China means all family members get together, have dinner and see the moon.

The moon at that night is at it's most beautiful and it’s roundest.

If there is anybody not at home with their family at this time, they will miss home very much.

So, no matter where you are you should give your regards to your families on this special night.

But it is very difficult to phone relatives, as the lines are so busy (everybody likes to phone home on this special day).

My parents, brothers and I were in three different provinces last night, I didn’t know how to pass the time until Jacky called me and invited me to his house.

Because all the people celebrate the festival, the roads are very busy and we took a long time to get his home.

When we arrived at his home, his parents were waiting for us at the front of their house and looked very happy as they saw us getting out of the car.

I knew the moon would be at its roundest and brightest at 9:09pm.

So, as soon as we got into their home, Monica and I went to the roof to see the moon.

Standing there, the bright moon was in the sky.

To the front of us, we could see the Government square’s fireworks display and also the train running to Shenzhen; behind us was Jacky’s mother’s garden which had many kinds of vegetables. All the while there was a cool breeze around us.

The view was so great that we even didn’t notice Jon and Jacky’s coming to join us.

At about 9:30, we went down and sat in seats that Jacky’s parents had prepared for us at the front of their house.

On the table there were many things, such as fruits, drinks, and of course moon cakes (which are traditionally eaten on this day) made by his parents.

The moon cakes were so delicious that we ate many.

Originating in the city of Canton (GuangZhou), there was a special custom that, at this time of year, people held red lamps in their hands.

So after we ate moon cakes, Monica and I both held lamps respectively and we walked along the street just outside of the house.

Jon took some photos of us.

For me, I haven’t played like this for more than 10 years, for Monica, she never had seen lamps like this before.

So both of us were very happy, and we talked much while we were walking.

Since Jon took his guitar with him, we could sing songs that he had taught before in class.

Jacky’s parents didn’t understand what we were singing, but they always smiled and applauded when we finished our songs.

The time went fast but the moon was still in the sky. It is a truly beautiful, happy night. Thanks to Jacky and his parents for the invitation.

For us, the night was special and I think all of us will never forget it.

This Mid - Autumn Day 2004 I missed my parents, I wished that they also had a good night, and I hope all the members of my family would have dinner together next Mid - Autumn Day and see the beauty of the moon as one.
