Liang Yan - New Chinese Writer

INDEX

Welcome to my world. My English name is LeAnne.

I come from JiangXi Province in China and am now based in GuangDong Province.

I would like to introduce you to a modern view of China from my unique and personal point of view.

My childhood

Yesterday I read a piece of news that said, "There was a little boy who, when he was 10 years old, his parents made him learn how to drive a car."

Also, "there was a girl of 15 who, in order to protect her from outside world, was asked to stay at home for 3 years…"

Compared with them, I think I am lucky as I have happy and free childhood.

I was born in a small village in JiangXi Province.

This Province is located just above GuangDong Province in the South East of China, and the village is very beautiful and safe.

When I was 5 years old, there was a black and white TV in our home and few programmes to choose from.

If we wanted to go somewhere far away, we had a 30-minute walk and then caught a bus, which we still had to wait at least half an hour for.

I didn’t have many toys to play with, books to read or parks to visit. I also did not have much money of my own to spend but I could enjoy myself.

At the front of our house, there was a small river. The water was clean and it had many fish in it. In summer, I always jumped into the river to catch fish.

Of course, I got soaking wet and the fish were too small to be eaten.

My grandfather was a fisherman and he could catch many fish with his nets.

My two brothers and I respected him very much and always followed him to see how he did it.

But there were some unfair things that went in my hometown (in my opinion).

At that time, swimming in the river was not seen to be good for girls, so my parents and my grandfather didn’t allow me to do it.

But I really liked swimming in the river, so some of my neighbours and I used to swim in the river without our parents knowing.

We knew that we would be punished if our parents found out, but we really loved to swim.

When swimming, we splashed water on each other and sometimes played some games under the water such as finding a special stone or playing a game to see who could stay the longest time under the water…

Because I couldn’t open my eyes in the water I always hurt myself. Meanwhile I couldn’t let my parents know what I was doing.

I didn’t have many books to read and at that time I didn’t like reading very much as I couldn’t understand them clearly.

So, when I was free at home, the children who were the same age as me played games together.

Some of us pretended to be teachers and others students.

We wrote anything we knew on the wall or on the ground and there were of course many mistakes, but that wasn’t important.

We would be proud when pretending to be the teacher, if someone didn’t pay attention in the class he would be asked to cook for the others. (But he only cooked sand and small stones as delicious pretend food).

I didn’t have money to buy toys so my father and grandfather made many wooden toys for me and they also taught me how to make them.

The hill behind our house was my paradise; my brothers and I went to the hill to cut small trees and bamboos to make the toys we liked.

There were also many mice, birds, rabbits and other animals that we could play with.

In the evening, my grandfather liked telling stories about events that had happened to him.

Some of them we had listened to many times but they were so fantastic that we looked forward to hearing them one more time.

My parents never forbade us to watch TV, as my father and I liked TV very much.

He always woke me up to watch TV after my mother and brothers fell asleep.

As the years go on, everything changes, I’m growing up, the river is being polluted, the trees and animals on the hill are also disappearing, and my parents and grandfather are older and never wake me up in the night any more.

But the memory of my childhood will never disappear as it is very important to me and will stay with me forever.
