Watching Dragon, Hidden Growler - Film Reviews. All films are stories. Told by writers, directors and many other creative people. This fact holds true whether the movies are British, from Hollywood, Bollywood or wherever in the world. I find many Chinese and East Asian films very innovative and highly entertaining.

Being a fan of period dramas I am particularly drawn to the beauty of the wuxia genre, often featuring the best wire-fu martial arts. Whether seen on the cinema big screen or on DVD, these movies are awesome. Let me introduce you to a few wuxia films and other Chinese and East Asian movies.

The Myth - A review...!

The Myth is an action packed fantasy set in part in the modern day and part in ancient Qin dynasty China. Directed by Stanley Tong and starring Jackie Chan, this is an ambitious adventure comedy which spans the centuries. It's different in the sense that is multi-cultural and told in part in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Hindi and English. Jackie Chan plays General Meng Yi and also Jack the archaeologist. We start in ancient China with Meng Yi escorting Korean princess Ok-Soo to be a concubine of the Emperor.

They are ambushed by Korean soldiers and the resulting action leads to a tragic event. Which brings us to the present day. We meet Jack who is a reincarnation of Meng Yi and are instantly catapulted on quest to find an object which can defy gravity. He travels to India where he finds out his destiny. Back in China he finds himself in a cave which has a shocking mystic secret. The Myth is a great vehicle for Jackie Chan's phyical comedy. There are plenty of ingenious fight scenes courtesy of Chan's imaginative choreography.

The fantasy elements are done well with some great CGI special effects. I loved the Qin dynasty scenes which had some good intimate moments. The costume designs were good and full of bright vivid colours. The constant switch between ancient China and the modern day made for some interesting storytelling. The mix of characters and change of languages throughout slightly slow down the story but the mixture of fun and cool action sequences make it an enjoyable romp. The score is well done and adds a layer of goodness to the overall narrative. I give The Myth 7 out of 10 for an enjoyable story.
