| Ah!
My Goddess - Where wishes can come true...! |
|
|
Goddess
Line, can I help you?
Ah!
My Goddess was a very popular manga series created by Kosuke Fujishima
and features the lead characters Heiichi Morisoto and the Goddess
Belldandy.
The
adaptation faithfully tells the tale of heiichi Morisoto who is
a student at the Nekomi Institute of Technology.
His
driving skills are the envy of all those around him but he is
unlucky in another department.
Love.
A
misdialled phone call puts him through to the mysterious Goddess
Helpline.
Immediately
the Goddess First Class named Belldandy appears and offers him
one wish.
In
a state of shock he asks for a girlfriend just like her as his
life partner.
This
wish is granted straight away and Heiichi and Belldandy are now
an immediate couple.
|
|
 |
Much
of the fun and charm of this series revolves around the differences in
cultures and lifestyles of Heiichi and Belldandy. A human and a goddess.
She
is trying to adapt to a mortal life and he is trying to learn and understand
about her while continuing his studies and his life. How will he tell
his friends and family?
How
will the two of them get by?
Ah!
My Goddess is a captivating series and very insightful.
I
give it 6 out of 10 and its released by MVM.

| Tenjho
Tenge - A School Kung Fu Comedy...! |
|
|
You'll
want to attend this school!
Tenjho
Tenge is the adaptation of an original manga created by Oh Great
(whose real name is Ito Oogure).
It's
produced by Studio Madhaouse who also brought to the small screen
Trigun and Vampire Hunter D.
Tenjho
Tenge is basically an action comedy set in a school where learning
kung fu skills is an essential part of the curriculum.
The
story revolves around Souichiro Nagi and his best friend Bob Makihara
who both pride themselves on their superior fighting skills.
After
mastering many previous schools the pair find themselves at the
Todo Academy which holds many unusual characters such as Aya.
Aya
is one of the Natsume sisters and is a member of the Juuken Club.
Aya
develops a crush on Souichiro and much fun develops from this. |
|
 |
Also
at the school is the Student Executive Council and their so-called 'executioners'
who deem themselves the only school authority and 'educates' anyone who
doesn't fall in line.
Of
course that means Souichiro and Bob are headed on a major collision course
with them.
I
like Tenjho Tenge's attitude and the whole show is very brave and entertaining.
The opening theme sequence shows the cast street dancing and it's quite
funny to watch.
The
fight sequences are done well and the show is very pleasing to watch.
Released
by MVM, I give Tenjho Tenge 7
out of 10 for its ambition.

7 - Dial Seven for Samurai...! |
|
|
A classic in the making
This
fantastic warrior epic is based on Akira Kurosawa's classic film
Seven Samurai. The key difference is the sci-fi futuristic twist
given to it by producers Studio Gonzo.
Picture
a futuristic world where a war has just ended. Scores of samurai
warriors - effectively warriors for hire - have nothing to do and
so become bandits.
The
Nobuseri, as they are known, loot and pillage helpless villages
across the countryside.
One
village, Kanna, decide to hire their own samurai to protect them.
Three
volunteers from the village lead the search for these good samurai.
The
heart broken, hot blooded Rikichi, Kirara the village's beautiful
Water Priestess and Komachi who is Kirara's stubborn little sister.
Packed
with action galore, it tells the tale of a small group of heroes
who band together to defend a small farming village against an army
of giant flying warrior robots amongst other foes. |
|
 |
On
a journey to the nearby city of Kogakyo they meet two samurai. Katsushiro
a new fighter and Kambei who is a highly experienced and skilled fighter.
And
so it begins...
This
is a classy series and easily one of the best out there.
I
give it 9 out of 10 because its that good.
Its
released by MVM and I urge you

| She,
the Ultimate Weapon - will astound you...! |
|
|
Battling to win your heart.
Imagine
a shy schoolgirl who is rebuilt into the world's greatest weapon.
That's the premise of this amazing anime series which will hit you
hard.
The
portrayl of Chise as an awkward and clumsy teenager really pulls
at the heartstrings.
It's
all based on the best-selling manga by Shin Takahashi and produced
with love by Studio Gonzo.
Set
the not too distant future you are plunged into the world of students
Chise and Shuji who go to school in the Japanese city of Hokkaido.
Chise
asks Shuji to be her boyfriend and the two of them embark on a romance
that is surprisingly well written.
Of
course, Chise's secret causes her to leave at the most unexpected
moments to perform tasks for the military. The country is at war
after all.
The
drama arises from whether Shuji will find out about Chise's other
life and how will it affect them. Believe me, it works and is a
powerful story. |
|
 |
I
was hooked from start to finish and highly recommend it.
This
series is known as Saikano, in Japan.
It's
released by Manga Entertainment and is a must see.
8
out of 10 from me.

Get the low down on this global sensation!
The character, a young ninja, has a best selling manga comic in
Japan and was created by Masahi Kishimoto.
The
anime series has become a worldwide smash!
Don't
you want to know what you're missing out on?
The
basic background is this. Many moons ago, the powerful Demon Fox
appeared in the peaceful village of Konoha, the Village Hidden in
the Leaves.
The
whole of this village was threatened by this evil force so the guardians,
Shinobis (or ninjas) tried to protect them but Demon Fox was too
strong.
Finally
one Shinobi (also known as the Fourth Hokage) made a horrific sacrifice
and sealed the spirit of the demon in the body of a newborn baby.
This
baby was known as Naruto Uzumaki. |

The
series begins with Naruto as a mischevious young orphan learning to be
a ninja with his mentor, Kakashi. He has eyes for the gorgeous Sakuro

- Sci-fi meets the Wild West... |
|
|
Trigun
is the adaptation of Yasuhiro Nightgow's Manga comic of the same name.
It
expertly blends sci-fi with westerns to produce a quality, action
packed show.
The
series centres around a man known as Vash the Stampede. His gunslinging
is so dangerous that there is a bounty of 60 billion dollars placed
on his head.
He's
also known as the Humanoid Typhoon and is a man of great mystery.
Though
his deeds show he is a peace-loving guy with an urge to help people,
an organisation known as the Bernadelli Insurance Agency have dispatched
two investigators on his trail, Meryl Strife and Milly Thompson.
Their
aim is to prevent Vash from causing any more damage.
Vash
also has another objective. To settle the score with the man who

- A different sort of Android...! |
|
|
How
real is real?
Chobits
is created by the all-female Manga team at CLAMP and can be described
as the adventures of a boy and his amazing life like computer android.
Hideki
is the boy in question and his story begins when he leaves his family's
country farm to go to the big city of Tokyo.
When
he gets there he's astounded to find and abundance of Persocoms
- personal computer androids designed to look and act like people
and animals.
A
lack of money means Hideko can just about afford the rent so there's
no way he can buy a Persocom.
But,
in a quirky twist of fate, he finds a discarded Persocom piled up
in some rubbish in a local alleyway.
It's
designed to look like a cute teenage girl and Hideko adopts it as
his own. He names it Chi discovers that though it has a missing
Operating System, it still functions. |
|
 |
Could
Chi be one of the legendary "Chobits"? A mysterious range of
custom built Persocoms thought to possess free will and emotions?
All
these questions and more are answered in this innovative series.

Signal - Two
can play that game! |
|
|
A
sneeze by any other name...
Lots
of anime series are based on best selling manga series and this
is no different.The
manga was written by Sachi Oshimizu and has been adapted into three
amazing 30-minute episodes!
Dr
Otoi a robotics expert builds a powerful android fighting machine
called Signal to act as a guardian to his young grandson Nobuhiko.
Unfortunately,
during the building process, a chance sneeze by Nobuhiko causes
a glitch in the androids programming.
Basically,
everytime Nobuhiko sneezes, Signal is transformed from an efficient
battle machine to a child-like ineffective but strangely lovable
wreck.
The
situation is complicated however by the introduction of Pulse.
This
is the prototype android built by Dr Otoi as the forerunner to Signal.
Pulse
has been reprogrammed by a rival of Dr Otoi in a bid to steal his
innovative robot technology and eliminate all and sundry who get
in his way. |
|
 |
Effectively,
this series cleverly mixes sci-fi, action and comedy to create an enjoyable
viewing.
Twin
Signal is released by MVM and
is certificate PG.
I
give it 6 out of 10 as it's well worth a look.

Metal Alchemist - A New Kind of Magic!!! |
|
|
"Human
kind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To
obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first
law of equivalent exchange."
And
so it begins...
It
never fails to amaze me when I witness the sheer ingenuity of anime
and the storylines contained within.
None
more so than Full Metal Alchemist. This is the story of two brothers
Ed and Al and is set in Europe in the early 20th Century in a semi-mythical
world.
They
are both alchemists, people with the special power to manipulate
and transform objects from one form to another.
The
story begins when Ed and Al use the forbidden science of alchemy
in an attempt to bring their deceased mother back to life.
The
plan backfires horribly resulting in a huge explosion.
The
accident causes Ed to lose an arm and Al's entire body was destroyed
save for his soul that was left hanging in limbo. |
|
 |
Ed
managed to transfer Al's soul into a nearby suit of armour at the last
minute. Thus saving Al's very essence but leaving him bitter at the loss
of his real body.
In
an attempt to restore their bodies and continue the process to bring their
mother back to life, Ed and Al embark on a quest to find the Philopher's
Stone. This is a mystic gem that has the power to amplify an alchemist's
powers.
The
only thing is, other people are also looking for this powerful artifact...
This
is science fiction and fantasy at its most original and is typical of
the quality that anime has always offered. The characters are well rounded
and fleshed out making it easy to care about their journeys and lives.
The
animation is top notch and the creature designs are out of this world!.

Zoshi - A Stunning Gem of a series...!! |
|
|
A
young girl, Hikaru no Raiko, impersonates her deceased brother to find
a mystical object, the magatama, in order to save her people.
| She's
aided by her brother's loyal retainer, Watanabe no Tsuna, a master
samurai swordsman.
And
there you have the crux of the story in a nutshell of this impressive
anime series.
Visually
striking and immediately capturing my eye, this is a period piece
with a difference.
Set
in Japan 972 AD in the middle of the Heian Period the action revolves
around Kyoto, the capital city of ancient Japan.
When
it comes the action is graceful and the animation is sleek beyond
belief. It dazzles everytime you see it.
Director
Mizuho Nishikubo has certainly crafted a gem of a series with plenty
of character depth and drama.
I
have to also mention Kazuchika Kise who doubled up on character
design and was also the supervising animation director. |
|
 |
The
characters are whole, real and engaging and I love the cliffhangers at
the end of each episode.
The
fast paced tune played on the opening credit sequence together with the
ballad sung on the closing sequences both sound perfect for the entire
piece, making this a real work of art.
All
in all I have to give this 8 1/2 out of 10 as it's better than most.

really need to see Otogi Zoshi, which is released by Manga Entertainment
and is rated 15.

| TOKKO
- You need to watch this cool Anime series!!! |
|
|
Japan.
Five years ago. Imagine a world where an earthquake has released a gateway
from unspeakable evil.
Creatures
and demons run rampant, turning the local population into crazed
zombies.
The
gateway was situated outside an apartment block. Most of those residents
did not survive the ensuing onslaught...
Imagine
a government agency being created to battle these creatures whenever
they appeared.
Oh,
and normal weapons can't hurt them, they can only be destroyed by
swords.
This
is the world of Tokko, the name of that government agency. Known
as the Special Public Safety Task Force.
Only
thing though, this agency and the invasion is top secret. No one
is supposed to know they exist.
Our
main lead character, Ranmaru Shindou, is a police officer, as is
his younger sister, Saya.
They
share a flat together and they were among the few survivors of that
apartment incident. |
|
 |
Ranmaru
slowly discovers the truth behind that apartment tragedy and the mysteries
of TOKKO.
Though
TOKKO has horror elements within it, the lead characters provide enough
comedy through their dialogue to take the edge off it and make a very
entertaining, action packed series.
The sharp, snappy dialogue had me hooked from the first episode. It's
a 13 episode series told over three volumes.
I
give it a quality 8 out of 10.

is released on DVD by Manga Entertainment and is rated 18.

| Don't
mess with the Gun X Sword... |
|
|
Gun
X Sword is a fantastic, edgy anime series which is set against a Old West
style backdrop.
Director
Goro Taniguchi launches us into an adventure featuring the lead
character Van of the Dawn, who is a tuzedo wearing, sword wielding
stranger on a mission of revenge.
A
mysterious clawed killer murdered his wife on his wedding day and
Van won't rest until he is found.
Encountering
numerous villians during his search, Van also has access to a giant
Mecha armour which looks as cool as hell when you see it on screen.
Very
handy in certain situations.
On
his travels, Van meets Wendy Garrett, a girl whose brother was kidnapped
by the clawed killer.
She
becomes his companion during his adventures.
This
action drama series has a very cool feel to it and I like the way
the characters are fleshed out giving a satisfying depth to the
whole show. |
|
 |
There's
also a touch of The Transformers about this series too. You'll see what
I mean when you watch it.
The
travelling from city to city theme means the ongoing storyline is kept
fresh with a ton of new ideas each time.
The
mix of sci-fi and the wild west is welcome too and those who loved the
anime series Cowboy Bebop or the sci-fi film Serenity will like this too.
Gun
X Sword has 26 episodes, is rated 15 and is released by MVM.
I
give it 8 out of 10.

| Samurai
Champloo's Battlecry... |
|
|
Samurai
Champloo is pure class. Mixing hip-hop with anime has produced a cool
mix which is great to behold.
I
love this show with a passion. From
the opening to closing theme tunes this is a great introduction
to why anime is a great storytelling medium.
Featuring
two contrasting samurai's, Mugen and Jin and their female companion,
Fuu, the series follows their adventures.
Directed
by the superbly talented Shinichiro Watanabe and jointly designed
by Kazuto Nakazawa and Mahiro Maeda, action and drama feature heavily.
The
word Champloo comes from the local dialect of Okinawa, Japan meaning
mixing or blending and that's exactly what we get here with a fusion
of ancient, feudal Japanese warrior culture with a hip-hop sensibility.
Cutting
edge animation features throughout making this quality viewing.
Produced
and performed by Nujabes
with lyrics by Shing02,
here's a taste of the first verse and chorus of the opening hip-hop
theme song called Battlecry; |
|
 |
Sharp
like an edge of a samurai sword
the mental blade cut through flesh and bone
though my mind's at peace, the world out of order
missing the inner heat, life gets colder
oh yes, I have to find my path
no less, walk on earth, water, and fire
the elements compose a magnum opus
my modus operandi is amalgam
steel packed tight in microchip
on my arm a sign of all-pro
the ultimate reward is honor, not awards
at odds with the times in wars with no lords
A
freelancer,
a battle cry of a hawk make a dove fly and a tear dry
wonder why the lone wolf don't run with a clan
only trust instincts and be one with the plan
CHORUS:
some days, some nights
some live, some die
in the way of the samurai
some fight, some bleed
sun up to sun down
the sons of a battlecry

| Turning
up the... Heat Guy J! |
|
|
Ok, let me
first tell you that I love the series Heat Guy J.
| This
is one of the best Anime series around and a great action laced
drama.
It
has elements of The Godfather and Robocop with a very subtle sci-fi
action flavour that is just addictively watchable.
Based
on the original works of Kazuki Akane and Satelight, Akane also
directs the series.
It
also showcases the work of character designer Nobuteru Yuuki. |
|
 |
Heat
Guy J the manga is featured in the Japanese monthly magazine “Z”
(Kodansha) by Chiaki Ogishima with the creators Kouichi Yubisui and Takuya
Akashi.
So,
what’s it all about anyway?
Ok,
it’s set sometime in the future in the city of Judoh. All oil produced
energy has been banned due to pollution and criminals with sentences greater
than 100 years are routinely operated on to graft animal features to their
faces and beast DNA as an eternal punishment.
All
the action revolves around the City Safety Management Agency.
In
particular, the pro-active Special Forces Unit, which is responsible for
detecting, signs of possible future crimes.
Often
acting on tip-offs the team consists of detective Daisuke Aurora
(known as Dice), Kyoko the long-suffering administration officer,
Antonia Belluci the lady responsible for developing technology used
to build androids.
She
now oversees the related maintenance and repairs of the final team
member, the main man himself, Heat Guy J.
Built
as Android J he partners Dice in the field and acts as his backup.
|
|
 |
J
has personality and is often heard spouting off clichéd words of
wisdom to Dice.
Being
an android however gives him extraordinary abilities such and enhanced
strength and athletic
abilities coupled with extraordinary speed.
This
provides great action sequences which are put to use against the mafia
like Leonelli criminal empire.
This
empire is led by the sadistic Vampire, Clair Leonelli the new Don. Every
episode has a raw, realistic feel and I find it flawless.
The
supporting cast and guest characters all have a point and have engaging
personalities.
Basically, you give a damn. You care about the characters and want to
know what happens next.
It’s
filmed like a live action movie with all the camera shots and angles that
wouldn’t be out of place in a summer blockbuster. Cartoons have
rarely looked this good.
But
to call this a cartoon would be an insult to the work put into it. Animated
series is the correct term if you don’t mind.
I
like the fact that all episodes are stand alone stories so you don't
feel you've come in late to the party.
The
episodes themselves are split into four sections.
The
intro often leads with a voice over featuring everyday conversation
with Heat Guy J and Dice on a mission.
This
brings us to the opening credits and opening theme tune. |
|
 |
And
what a theme tune!
Called
“Face” and performed by Try Force, it’s J-Rock (Japanese
Rock) sound really captures the mood and adds to the whole experience.
A
poor choice could have wrecked the feature but the production crew chose
wisely. The tune is accompanied by interspersed action shots of the main
cast and serves to whet the appetite for more.
The
main feature follows and everything is wrapped up by the end credits and
closing theme song. The closing tune is an upbeat J-Pop piece called “Kokoro-No-Sumika”
and is performed by Wyse. It shows J and Dice riding off into the sunset
on their vehicle of choice, a futuristic motorbike.
The
tag line for the series goes “They needed a new hero… So they
built Heat Guy J”.
Well
let me tell you, they also built one of the best Anime series of modern
times.
My
final verdict of Heat Guy J is 9 out of 10 for sheer class.

Looking at the... Ghost In the Shell 2: Innocence |
|
|
Congratulations.
You’ve just arrived at my first ever anime review.
Special
thanks to Julian Martin and Farhana Shaikh for recommendations and
introductions into the world of Anime!
Right,
this is a sequel to the massively successful Ghost in the Shell
(1995), which was one of my all time favourite anime productions.
The
original was a great 9 out of 10 film.
The
original was the film that inspired The Matrix trilogy. |
|
 |
Don’t
believe me? Watch them back-to-back.
I
was always going to compare the sequel to the original , which I guess
is a tad unfair, as high expectations sometimes tend to disappoint.
I’ll
get to the first one in a future column but here’s my view of the
second. I’ve been waiting to see this the minute I heard it was
coming out.
It’s
based on the manga (comic book) by Masamune Shirow and the adapted anime
was directed by Mamoru Oshii (who also directed the original). Here’s
a brief background.
Set
in the future, on Earth, in the year 2032. The few humans still resident
live side by side with two main types of humanoid machines, cyborgs and
dolls.
Cyborgs
are robots, which have human spirits inhabiting their mechanized bodies,
while dolls have no human traces whatsoever.
The
main protagonist, lead character, is Batou. He’s a cyborg
detective for the government’s covert anti-terrorist unit
Public Security Section 9.
Batou
and his partner, the human Togusa, are charged with investigating
the peculiar case of a malfunctioning doll that has murdered its
owner.
The
further and further the detectives venture into this investigation
they uncover a barrel of worms in the form of violent Yakuza thugs,
devious hackers, corrupt influential government bureaucrats and
powerful corporate criminals. |
|
 |
The
true cause and scale of the murder mystery is more complex and more shocking
than anyone would have ever dared imagine.
The
animation in this feature is absolutely stunning. It’s not surprising
that the film was nominated for the Cannes International Film Festival’s
highly prestigious Palme D’Or. It features a gorgeous mix of 3D
CGI and traditional 2D animation.
The
sheer attention to detail in every minute on the film is quite breathtaking.
It’s obviously a labour of love for the creators involved.
Some
of the CGI however is a bit overdone in places but this doesn’t
affect the movie too much.
The
action and fight scenes are totally perfect. Fluid in motion, and definitely
the best parts of the film. Gripping stuff! The atmosphere of a haunting
sense of dread was well done and the score complimented this perfectly.
We
are treated to an up close and personal view of Batou’s everyday
life and it’s a very warming, emotional experience.
He
lives alone with his dog and you just forget he's a cyborg the way
he carries himself.
For
me the whole thing was let down by some of the narration in the
dubbed version of the movie. There’s just too much exposition,
explaining the story, and it really overpowers everything. |
|
 |
Remember
the dialogue in that scene in the Matrix Reloaded where Neo first meets
The Architect? You know, the one where you needed a dictionary to hand
to decipher the entire conversation?
Well
imagine a whole film of that. Ok, well maybe not a whole film but you
get my meaning. Basically, it just moved too slowly for my liking.
The
movie is available on DVD in the original Japanese version with English
subtitles and an English dubbed version.
It’s
a clever movie, a thinking person’s movie and definitely not a popcorn
movie. Keep your brain switched on to its highest level to fully enjoy
it.
My
final verdict of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is 6 out of 10.
