Here are a selection that deserve your attention.

Rawle Austin presents...

A Young Master of the Piano

In a slight detour from normal proceedings I'd like to introduce you to Niu Niu.

This is the nickname for the nine year old prodigy that is Zhang Shengliang.

Pianist extraordinaire.

On his first visit to London I went to see him perform at the Wigmore Hall.

This venue doesn’t normally open on a Sunday but made an exception for this wonderful young talent.

Niu Niu was born on July 11 1997. His early advanced musical ability lead to his father Zhang Chengfeng (the headmaster of Aixin Training school) training him from the age of four.

After a succession of noted tutors he is now guided by his current mentor William Chen.

His repertoire includes eighteen Mozart concertos, and concertos by Chopin and Beetoven which is simply astounding for a boy of his age.

Niu Niu’s first public performance was in Xiamen in August 2003.

He regularly performs concertos with orchestra and recitals and has appeared at a festival in Paris.

So.

Back to Wigmore Hall.

The stage was set and appropriately grand.

The hall was packed and after a brief introduction from David Tang, the joint organiser of the event with Leslie Howard, Niu Niu appeared.

I was struck by seeing this nine year old, dressed to the nines in full suit and tails, given his small stature.

He gave a bow to the audience before sitting at the grand piano.

And then he began to play.

Absolutely spellbinding.

This was more than music, this was magic to the ears.

Performing concertos by noted composers Claude Debussy and Fryderyk Chopin, once he began I sensed the crowd did not want the experience to end.

I was captivated from start to finish.

All the while, Niu Niu’s parents watched proudly from the front row.

I felt privileged to be listening to a legend unfold before my very ears.

The finale saw Niu Niu duet with the Shostakovich Chamber Players (a mini orchestra) lead by Ania Safonova and Andrew Crowley on solo trumpet.

This was a sensational triumph of classical brilliance and a joy to behold.

Amazingly, we were all treated to an encore! What a delight!

The final ovation he received from the audience was soaked in raw admiration and adulation.

I felt honoured to have witnessed this amazing event and briefly met Niu Niu and his parents afterwards while they posed for photographs.

So remember, this will not be the last time that you hear about the captivating sounds from the fingers of Niu Niu.

Long may his musical career flourish!
